*from 'Burnin'' (1973)*

A#m I shot the sheriff,

D#m A#m But I didn't shoot no deputy, oh no! Oh!

A#m I shot the sheriff,

D#m A#m But I didn't shoot no deputy. Ooh, ooh, oo-ooh.

F# Fm7 A#m All a-round in my home town,

F# Fm7 A#mThey're tryin' to track me down;

F# Fm7 A#m They say they want to bring me in guilty,

F# Fm7 A#mFor the killing of a depu-ty,

F# Fm7 A#mFor the life of a dep-uty. But I say...

*(Riff):

A#m I shot the sheriff,

D#m A#m But I swear it was in self-defence. (Oh, no! Yeah!)

A#m D#mI say; I shot the sheriff, oh Lord!

A#mAnd they say it is a capital offence. Yeah!

F# Fm7 A#m Sheriff John Brown always hated me,

F# Fm7 A#mFor what... I don't know.

F# Fm7 A#mEvery time I plant a seed,

F# Fm7 A#mHe said kill it be-fore it grow,

F# Fm7 A#mHe said kill them be-fore they grow. And so, and so...

*(Riff):

(Read it in the news!)

A#m I shot the sheriff,

D#m A#m But I swear it was in self-defence. I say;

A#m I shot the sheriff,

D#m A#m But I swear it was in self-defence. (Yeah!)

F# Fm7 A#m Freedom came my way one day,

F# Fm7 A#mAnd I started, out of town, yeah!

F# Fm7 A#m All of a sudden I saw Sheriff John Brown,

F# Fm7 A#m Aiming to shoot me down,

F# Fm7 A#mSo I shot, I shot, I shot him down. And I say...

*(Riff):

(If I am guilty, I will pay)...

A#m I shot the sheriff,

D#m A#m But I didn't shoot no deputy, oh no! Oh!

A#m I shot the sheriff,

D#m A#m But I didn't shoot no deputy. Ooh, ooh, oo-ooh.

F# Fm7 A#mRe-flexes had the better of me,

F# Fm7 A#mAnd what is to be must be.

F# Fm7 A#mEvery day, the bucket a-go a-well,

F# Fm7 A#m One day the bottom a-go drop out,

F# Fm7 A#m One day the bottom a-go drop out.

*(Riff):

(I say)...

A#mI-I-I, I shot the sheriff,

D#m A#m Lord, I didn't shot the depu-ty. No!

A#mI-I...(shot the sheriff),

D#m A#m But I didn't shoot no deputy. Yeah! So, yeah!

A#m D#m

A#m

(Repeat to Fade)
