*from 'Burnin'' (1973)*

Bm I shot the sheriff,

Em Bm But I didn't shoot no deputy, oh no! Oh!

Bm I shot the sheriff,

Em Bm But I didn't shoot no deputy. Ooh, ooh, oo-ooh.

G F#m7 Bm All a-round in my home town,

G F#m7 BmThey're tryin' to track me down;

G F#m7 Bm They say they want to bring me in guilty,

G F#m7 BmFor the killing of a depu-ty,

G F#m7 BmFor the life of a dep-uty. But I say...

*(Riff):

Bm I shot the sheriff,

Em Bm But I swear it was in self-defence. (Oh, no! Yeah!)

Bm EmI say; I shot the sheriff, oh Lord!

BmAnd they say it is a capital offence. Yeah!

G F#m7 Bm Sheriff John Brown always hated me,

G F#m7 BmFor what... I don't know.

G F#m7 BmEvery time I plant a seed,

G F#m7 BmHe said kill it be-fore it grow,

G F#m7 BmHe said kill them be-fore they grow. And so, and so...

*(Riff):

(Read it in the news!)

Bm I shot the sheriff,

Em Bm But I swear it was in self-defence. I say;

Bm I shot the sheriff,

Em Bm But I swear it was in self-defence. (Yeah!)

G F#m7 Bm Freedom came my way one day,

G F#m7 BmAnd I started, out of town, yeah!

G F#m7 Bm All of a sudden I saw Sheriff John Brown,

G F#m7 Bm Aiming to shoot me down,

G F#m7 BmSo I shot, I shot, I shot him down. And I say...

*(Riff):

(If I am guilty, I will pay)...

Bm I shot the sheriff,

Em Bm But I didn't shoot no deputy, oh no! Oh!

Bm I shot the sheriff,

Em Bm But I didn't shoot no deputy. Ooh, ooh, oo-ooh.

G F#m7 BmRe-flexes had the better of me,

G F#m7 BmAnd what is to be must be.

G F#m7 BmEvery day, the bucket a-go a-well,

G F#m7 Bm One day the bottom a-go drop out,

G F#m7 Bm One day the bottom a-go drop out.

*(Riff):

(I say)...

BmI-I-I, I shot the sheriff,

Em Bm Lord, I didn't shot the depu-ty. No!

BmI-I...(shot the sheriff),

Em Bm But I didn't shoot no deputy. Yeah! So, yeah!
