*from 'Burnin'' (1973)*

Am I shot the sheriff,

Dm Am But I didn't shoot no deputy, oh no! Oh!

Am I shot the sheriff,

Dm Am But I didn't shoot no deputy. Ooh, ooh, oo-ooh.

F Em7 Am All a-round in my home town,

F Em7 AmThey're tryin' to track me down;

F Em7 Am They say they want to bring me in guilty,

F Em7 AmFor the killing of a depu-ty,

F Em7 AmFor the life of a dep-uty. But I say...

*(Riff):

Am I shot the sheriff,

Dm Am But I swear it was in self-defence. (Oh, no! Yeah!)

Am DmI say; I shot the sheriff, oh Lord!

AmAnd they say it is a capital offence. Yeah!

F Em7 Am Sheriff John Brown always hated me,

F Em7 AmFor what... I don't know.

F Em7 AmEvery time I plant a seed,

F Em7 AmHe said kill it be-fore it grow,

F Em7 AmHe said kill them be-fore they grow. And so, and so...

*(Riff):

(Read it in the news!)

Am I shot the sheriff,

Dm Am But I swear it was in self-defence. I say;

Am I shot the sheriff,

Dm Am But I swear it was in self-defence. (Yeah!)

F Em7 Am Freedom came my way one day,

F Em7 AmAnd I started, out of town, yeah!

F Em7 Am All of a sudden I saw Sheriff John Brown,

F Em7 Am Aiming to shoot me down,

F Em7 AmSo I shot, I shot, I shot him down. And I say...

*(Riff):

(If I am guilty, I will pay)...

Am I shot the sheriff,

Dm Am But I didn't shoot no deputy, oh no! Oh!

Am I shot the sheriff,

Dm Am But I didn't shoot no deputy. Ooh, ooh, oo-ooh.

F Em7 AmRe-flexes had the better of me,

F Em7 AmAnd what is to be must be.

F Em7 AmEvery day, the bucket a-go a-well,

F Em7 Am One day the bottom a-go drop out,

F Em7 Am One day the bottom a-go drop out.

*(Riff):

(I say)...

AmI-I-I, I shot the sheriff,

Dm Am Lord, I didn't shot the depu-ty. No!

AmI-I...(shot the sheriff),

Dm Am But I didn't shoot no deputy. Yeah! So, yeah!
