*from 'Burnin'' (1973)*

G#m I shot the sheriff,

C#m G#m But I didn't shoot no deputy, oh no! Oh!

G#m I shot the sheriff,

C#m G#m But I didn't shoot no deputy. Ooh, ooh, oo-ooh.

E D#m7 G#m All a-round in my home town,

E D#m7 G#mThey're tryin' to track me down;

E D#m7 G#m They say they want to bring me in guilty,

E D#m7 G#mFor the killing of a depu-ty,

E D#m7 G#mFor the life of a dep-uty. But I say...

*(Riff):

G#m I shot the sheriff,

C#m G#m But I swear it was in self-defence. (Oh, no! Yeah!)

G#m C#mI say; I shot the sheriff, oh Lord!

G#mAnd they say it is a capital offence. Yeah!

E D#m7 G#m Sheriff John Brown always hated me,

E D#m7 G#mFor what... I don't know.

E D#m7 G#mEvery time I plant a seed,

E D#m7 G#mHe said kill it be-fore it grow,

E D#m7 G#mHe said kill them be-fore they grow. And so, and so...

*(Riff):

(Read it in the news!)

G#m I shot the sheriff,

C#m G#m But I swear it was in self-defence. I say;

G#m I shot the sheriff,

C#m G#m But I swear it was in self-defence. (Yeah!)

E D#m7 G#m Freedom came my way one day,

E D#m7 G#mAnd I started, out of town, yeah!

E D#m7 G#m All of a sudden I saw Sheriff John Brown,

E D#m7 G#m Aiming to shoot me down,

E D#m7 G#mSo I shot, I shot, I shot him down. And I say...

*(Riff):

(If I am guilty, I will pay)...

G#m I shot the sheriff,

C#m G#m But I didn't shoot no deputy, oh no! Oh!

G#m I shot the sheriff,

C#m G#m But I didn't shoot no deputy. Ooh, ooh, oo-ooh.

E D#m7 G#mRe-flexes had the better of me,

E D#m7 G#mAnd what is to be must be.

E D#m7 G#mEvery day, the bucket a-go a-well,

E D#m7 G#m One day the bottom a-go drop out,

E D#m7 G#m One day the bottom a-go drop out.

*(Riff):

(I say)...

G#mI-I-I, I shot the sheriff,

C#m G#m Lord, I didn't shot the depu-ty. No!

G#mI-I...(shot the sheriff),

C#m G#m But I didn't shoot no deputy. Yeah! So, yeah!

G#m C#m

G#m
