*from 'Burnin'' (1973)*

Gm I shot the sheriff,

Cm Gm But I didn't shoot no deputy, oh no! Oh!

Gm I shot the sheriff,

Cm Gm But I didn't shoot no deputy. Ooh, ooh, oo-ooh.

D# Dm7 Gm All a-round in my home town,

D# Dm7 GmThey're tryin' to track me down;

D# Dm7 Gm They say they want to bring me in guilty,

D# Dm7 GmFor the killing of a depu-ty,

D# Dm7 GmFor the life of a dep-uty. But I say...

*(Riff):

Gm I shot the sheriff,

Cm Gm But I swear it was in self-defence. (Oh, no! Yeah!)

Gm CmI say; I shot the sheriff, oh Lord!

GmAnd they say it is a capital offence. Yeah!

D# Dm7 Gm Sheriff John Brown always hated me,

D# Dm7 GmFor what... I don't know.

D# Dm7 GmEvery time I plant a seed,

D# Dm7 GmHe said kill it be-fore it grow,

D# Dm7 GmHe said kill them be-fore they grow. And so, and so...

*(Riff):

(Read it in the news!)

Gm I shot the sheriff,

Cm Gm But I swear it was in self-defence. I say;

Gm I shot the sheriff,

Cm Gm But I swear it was in self-defence. (Yeah!)

D# Dm7 Gm Freedom came my way one day,

D# Dm7 GmAnd I started, out of town, yeah!

D# Dm7 Gm All of a sudden I saw Sheriff John Brown,

D# Dm7 Gm Aiming to shoot me down,

D# Dm7 GmSo I shot, I shot, I shot him down. And I say...

*(Riff):

(If I am guilty, I will pay)...

Gm I shot the sheriff,

Cm Gm But I didn't shoot no deputy, oh no! Oh!

Gm I shot the sheriff,

Cm Gm But I didn't shoot no deputy. Ooh, ooh, oo-ooh.

D# Dm7 GmRe-flexes had the better of me,

D# Dm7 GmAnd what is to be must be.

D# Dm7 GmEvery day, the bucket a-go a-well,

D# Dm7 Gm One day the bottom a-go drop out,

D# Dm7 Gm One day the bottom a-go drop out.

*(Riff):

(I say)...

GmI-I-I, I shot the sheriff,

Cm Gm Lord, I didn't shot the depu-ty. No!

GmI-I...(shot the sheriff),

Cm Gm But I didn't shoot no deputy. Yeah! So, yeah!
