*from 'Burnin'' (1973)*

C#m I shot the sheriff,

F#m C#m But I didn't shoot no deputy, oh no! Oh!

C#m I shot the sheriff,

F#m C#m But I didn't shoot no deputy. Ooh, ooh, oo-ooh.

A G#m7 C#m All a-round in my home town,

A G#m7 C#mThey're tryin' to track me down;

A G#m7 C#m They say they want to bring me in guilty,

A G#m7 C#mFor the killing of a depu-ty,

A G#m7 C#mFor the life of a dep-uty. But I say...

*(Riff):

C#m I shot the sheriff,

F#m C#m But I swear it was in self-defence. (Oh, no! Yeah!)

C#m F#mI say; I shot the sheriff, oh Lord!

C#mAnd they say it is a capital offence. Yeah!

A G#m7 C#m Sheriff John Brown always hated me,

A G#m7 C#mFor what... I don't know.

A G#m7 C#mEvery time I plant a seed,

A G#m7 C#mHe said kill it be-fore it grow,

A G#m7 C#mHe said kill them be-fore they grow. And so, and so...

*(Riff):

(Read it in the news!)

C#m I shot the sheriff,

F#m C#m But I swear it was in self-defence. I say;

C#m I shot the sheriff,

F#m C#m But I swear it was in self-defence. (Yeah!)

A G#m7 C#m Freedom came my way one day,

A G#m7 C#mAnd I started, out of town, yeah!

A G#m7 C#m All of a sudden I saw Sheriff John Brown,

A G#m7 C#m Aiming to shoot me down,

A G#m7 C#mSo I shot, I shot, I shot him down. And I say...

*(Riff):

(If I am guilty, I will pay)...

C#m I shot the sheriff,

F#m C#m But I didn't shoot no deputy, oh no! Oh!

C#m I shot the sheriff,

F#m C#m But I didn't shoot no deputy. Ooh, ooh, oo-ooh.

A G#m7 C#mRe-flexes had the better of me,

A G#m7 C#mAnd what is to be must be.

A G#m7 C#mEvery day, the bucket a-go a-well,

A G#m7 C#m One day the bottom a-go drop out,

A G#m7 C#m One day the bottom a-go drop out.

*(Riff):

(I say)...

C#mI-I-I, I shot the sheriff,

F#m C#m Lord, I didn't shot the depu-ty. No!

C#mI-I...(shot the sheriff),

F#m C#m But I didn't shoot no deputy. Yeah! So, yeah!

C#m F#m

C#m
