*from 'Burnin'' (1973)*

D#m I shot the sheriff,

G#m D#m But I didn't shoot no deputy, oh no! Oh!

D#m I shot the sheriff,

G#m D#m But I didn't shoot no deputy. Ooh, ooh, oo-ooh.

B A#m7 D#m All a-round in my home town,

B A#m7 D#mThey're tryin' to track me down;

B A#m7 D#m They say they want to bring me in guilty,

B A#m7 D#mFor the killing of a depu-ty,

B A#m7 D#mFor the life of a dep-uty. But I say...

*(Riff):

D#m I shot the sheriff,

G#m D#m But I swear it was in self-defence. (Oh, no! Yeah!)

D#m G#mI say; I shot the sheriff, oh Lord!

D#mAnd they say it is a capital offence. Yeah!

B A#m7 D#m Sheriff John Brown always hated me,

B A#m7 D#mFor what... I don't know.

B A#m7 D#mEvery time I plant a seed,

B A#m7 D#mHe said kill it be-fore it grow,

B A#m7 D#mHe said kill them be-fore they grow. And so, and so...

*(Riff):

(Read it in the news!)

D#m I shot the sheriff,

G#m D#m But I swear it was in self-defence. I say;

D#m I shot the sheriff,

G#m D#m But I swear it was in self-defence. (Yeah!)

B A#m7 D#m Freedom came my way one day,

B A#m7 D#mAnd I started, out of town, yeah!

B A#m7 D#m All of a sudden I saw Sheriff John Brown,

B A#m7 D#m Aiming to shoot me down,

B A#m7 D#mSo I shot, I shot, I shot him down. And I say...

*(Riff):

(If I am guilty, I will pay)...

D#m I shot the sheriff,

G#m D#m But I didn't shoot no deputy, oh no! Oh!

D#m I shot the sheriff,

G#m D#m But I didn't shoot no deputy. Ooh, ooh, oo-ooh.

B A#m7 D#mRe-flexes had the better of me,

B A#m7 D#mAnd what is to be must be.

B A#m7 D#mEvery day, the bucket a-go a-well,

B A#m7 D#m One day the bottom a-go drop out,

B A#m7 D#m One day the bottom a-go drop out.

*(Riff):

(I say)...

D#mI-I-I, I shot the sheriff,

G#m D#m Lord, I didn't shot the depu-ty. No!

D#mI-I...(shot the sheriff),

G#m D#m But I didn't shoot no deputy. Yeah! So, yeah!

D#m G#m

D#m
